Lovely Library Things

My name is Sarah. I’m a 25-year-old children’s librarian, and this is my tumblr!

While I mainly post about my programs, this is also a space for me to throw thoughts, pictures, and articles that have anything to do with libraries, books, education, etc.

Or, you know, just things that amuse, delight, and/or enrage me.

If you’ve got any questions, feel free to shoot me an ask. I’d love to hear from you!

In the evening Alice sat on her grandfather’s knee and listened to his stories of faraway places. When he had finished, Alice would say, “When I grow up, I too will go to faraway places, and when I grow old, I too will live beside the sea.”

“That is all very well, little Alice,” said her grandfather, “but there is a third thing you must do…You must do something to make the world more beautiful.”

This month we read Miss Rumphius by Barbara Cooney for Second Grade Book Club. It’s one of my all time favorites, so I was beyond pleased that the entire group liked it.

We had a full group of 15 and almost no whining or behavior problems (which is a miracle). They all were excited to share their ideas (I got the nifty printouts here), and it really seemed like almost everyone understood the message of the story. As one of the boys put it, the book “isn’t really about flowers”.

Yesterday was one of the first truly beautiful spring days we’ve had, so I opened up the program room doors while we planted all kinds of seeds. Hopefully they’ll have had some gardening success to report back at next month’s book club.

Only one session of second grade book club left until Fall! Thinking back, Miss Rumphius was the first book I ever used for book club. I feel like I’ve come a long way since I first started out. This June will be my 2 year anniversary working as a Children’s Librarian. How crazy is that!?
